Biography
Sofia Scattarreggia is an Italian-American soprano from Spain heralded for her rich tone and compelling stage presence. Her passionate yet meticulous approach to music has led her to champion a wide range of repertoire, and she has been seen performing in roles such as Blanche de la Force in Dialogues des Carmelites, the title role in Florencia en el Amazonas, Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Lady with a Cake Box in Postcard from Morocco, Phaino in Kate Soper’s Here be Sirens, Eurydice in Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, among many others. Most recently, Dr. Scattarreggia joined the roster of Gerdine Young Artists at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis covering the roles of Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus and will be making her house and role debut with Annapolis Opera as Donna Anna in their fall production of Don Giovanni.

As an active interpreter and advocate of new music, Dr. Scattarreggia regularly performs challenging modern and post-tonal works such as Phillipe Manoury’s Vier Lieder aus Kein Licht and Luigi Dallapiccola’s Parole di San Paolo. She has premiered several award-winning vocal works such as the roles of Blanca in Justin Giarusso’s chamber opera A World Apart, Leni in Florida State’s premiere production of Joshua Baerwald’s opera The Process, and various song cycles including While Roses Grow (Robert Strobel) and Where Dreams Come True (Ian Guthrie). She has worked with acclaimed, active composers such as Jake Heggie, Shiela Silver, John Musto, and Libby Larsen.

Dr. Scattarreggia is a decorated competitor and has won multiple awards through the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition (2024 Encouragement Winner, 2023 Buffalo-Toronto District Winner). Other selected awards include 3rd place in the Eastman School of Music’s Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition (2024), two winning awards in the Friends of Eastman Opera Competition (1st Place Winner, 2023; 3rd Place Winner, 2021), 1st place in NYSMTA’s Heddy Killian Vocal Competition (2022) and winning the Hannah J. Beaulieu Competition for Opera Development at Florida State University (2018).

A champion of both the stage and the academic realm, Dr. Scattarreggia received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with acclaimed soprano Nicole Cabell. Academic accolades include induction into the national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda, nomination for the prestigious Graue Musicology Fellowship for their essay Reconstructing the Romantic Voice: Creating a Vocal Model based on the Teachings in Manuel García’s “L’art du chant” (2022), and nomination for the Lecture-Recital Prize for her presentation Beyond the Trill: An Analysis of the Pedagogical Efficiency of the Estelle Liebling Vocal Course (2024). In addition to being an experienced pianist, Dr. Scattarreggia speaks English, Italian, Spanish, German, French, and Catalan.
